View Full Version : It's official!!! I am now a trainee producer!!
I told you a couple of weeks ago that i got accepted for an apprenticeship at a recording studio in london, this is a huge thing for me, i have always wanted to be a producer or at least work in a studio.
It's an intense course which in two years time if i pass, i will be a fully qualified producer.
I am taking this very seriously and know that this opportunity doesnt come around very often, they had almost three times the amount of applicants than places, they only take on 12 people every year and my dj experience seems to have helped me get a place
Today it is official, the relevant papers have been signed and fee paid. And just being back at the studio today makes me impatient to start!! I am so ready to prove my ability and if for some reason i am not able to produce, i will be qualified also for sound engineering for live gigs and studio surroundings. So i am sure i will be working in the industry somewhere and am perfectly willing to 'earn my stripes', my dream is to be a producer but my goal is to just work somewhere in the industry, i will be so chuffed if either happens.
The two chief producers at this studio have about 30yrs experience each so i am definately in good hands!! The owner of the studio, Andy McBride recently winning the 'unsung hero' award at the latest Music Producers Guild (MPG) Awards
Its' long winded i know but i am so chuffed and proud of myself, i just wanted to share it with you!!
Here are some pics of the studio where i will be working

yes Anji, keep us informed of how it is all going
ok so huuuge update lol, sorry guys, i've had my head stuck in assignments, this course is really intense and when i get home on studio days i am so tired.
Anyway, Deb, i am so sorry, was meant to respond to this but forgot so really late but i can give a better answer now anyway lol
Did it give you any idea of where you can see yourself fitting into things in the industry?
Yep, kinda, we have covered all of the roles within the industry now, from A+R people, managers, producers, sound engineers and so on and so on, the list is endless (well not quite endless because we've covered them all now :devillaugh: )
But anywhoo, i started the course thinking i wanted to be a producer, and i guess that is still kind of the dream, having creative control over the outcome of a record is something i think i could be really good at BUT i didnt realise there was so much business stuff that goes with it, managing contracts, budgeting, negotiating with record companies etc, this part does not appeal to me and i'm not sure i'd be very suited to it :hmm:
However, alot of the roles i thought the producer did are actually done by the sound engineer, they are more hands on with the making of the music, if i work in a studio then this is what i would like to do with the odd producing job as a bonus i think ;-)
The other option is live sound engineer, this is really appealing to me, it is in some ways more difficult and challenging than the studio engineer, but imo the rewards are greater. But the reality is, i dont think this is a real option given i have two small kids, i cant go away for tours at a time.
So i guess i am aiming for studio engineer plus some producing, with hopefully some live work when the oportunities arise  does that make sense?
second post lol told you it was gonna be a huge update, as some of you read in the beautiful day thread, i had the prvilage of going to a seminar with some top producers and industry people.
It was awesome!! And i came home so excited and pumped about the day, i really learned alot, they did some workshops, showing us their little tricks and giving advice on how to make the most of our equipment, there were also lectures about the music business and where its going, and where the new generation of artists/producers/engineers fit into it and how the way we do business has changed, very interesting stuff! There was even a light hearted debate on who was the most important person in the industry and if Simon Cowell is as important as he thinks he is :-p
There were many top people there but these were the main three, and boy did i learn alot from these guys! They were really open to questions and were more than happy to share their wisdom with us :-) It's really great that these hugely successful producers were so happy to ahre their knowledge and experience with us
Anyway the top three were
Phil Harding (produced for Kylie, Jackson 5,Elton John, Cliff Richard, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Roxette, Pet Shop Boys, The Clash etc, the list goes on and on of the international acts he has worked with) if youre interested, you can check him out here (http://www.recordproduction.com/phil_harding.htm)
He did a workshop showing us how he mixes songs for the sound he obviously is so good at getting, and he brought the multitrack of Elton John's 'Captain Fantastic' he broke it down and showed us from scratch how it was all put together track by track, really interesting stuff!
George Shilling (produced for The Corrs,Boy George, Blur, Yazz, James Brown, Mike Oldfield, Primal Scream, Mary J Blige etc) find him here (http://www.recordproduction.com/george-shilling-record-producer.htm)
And the big gun of the day and host was Tony Platt (produced for Bob Marley,AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Aswad, Boomtown Rats,Foreigner, Cheap Trick etc)This guy was sooo friendly and so willing to talk and give advice, i really came away with alot of respect for him  find him here (http://www.platinumtones.com/home.htm)
I wont waffle on and on and bore you lol,if theres something here you want me to talk about more then jsut say and i will but i dotn want to have you guys sleeping through my posts lol but it was an amazing day and really put into perspective what i'm aiming for, and although these guys were huge and successful, they somehow made it feel possible :-)
hi anji,
thanx for the update!!!
i wonder do these famous producers feel like stars themselves or are they rather down to earth?
have you asked any if they know marya roxx? and if yes what do they think of her?
Congratulations Anji, it seems to be really cool :-D
Sorry for late congrats, but I haven't seen this thread before :-(
Congrats, awesome!! I love that studio, it looks amazing!! Bet you'll have loads of fun there :-D
thanks for the update Anji:-)
Thanks Jas :-D

Congrats, awesome!! I love that studio, it looks amazing!! Bet you'll have loads of fun there :-D
It is alot of fun Daario, it's alot of work and the assignments can get a bit stressful, but i have done 3 recordings using the proffesional software for an assignment, but today was the coolest, we started the practical lessons finally in the instrument recording room, so i have been learning how to set up mics and which type for which job, where to put them, how to set up a guitar etc, very cool day, loads of info but it was great :-D

Well, i'm not sure how they feel, but when i spoke to them, they didnt give any impression that they thought they were so great, they didnt name drop either, only when referrring to a recording session with someone just to prove a technical point, it seemed to me that they knew how big they were and what they had achieved and was proud of it, but didnt feel like that seperated them from those of us who have not worked with big names or even those like me who are training.
And i guess to support that theory, you could take into account that they all said they prefer to not work with record companies anymore, they now all work mostly with unsigned/self budgeted bands, their reason for this mostly was that in their opinion the record companies have become too much about business and didnt allow so much creativity anymore, and they feel they get this from smaller bands who still have the dream and are doing something the producers can get passionate about.
And yea, i managed to mention Marya to George Shilling, he told me to send him the link to her myspace and is gonna check her out  there wasnt really an oportunity with the other 2.
Also my tutor is planning to come to the london gig  during lunch last week, i played him some songs from the album and he really liked it :-D Also 2 guys in my study group said they are gonna come too :-)

Hey wow Anji, this is absolutely fantastic! :-) The more known Marya gets in these circles the better! I'm so proud of you fulfilling your dream! I think you'll be a fantastic producer! :guitar:
Thank you guys :-) you're support really means alot to me :grouphug:
Sorry for delay in replying :-) Glad things are going so well :hugs: knew you could do it :-p

I will certainly keep you guys informed on how i get on, its getting more interesting now we have done alot of the theory stuff, getting hands on with the desk and the instruments really makes me more enthusiastic to do this and makes me wonder why i never did it before
Well i think 2 are definates for the london gig, the other guy said yes but not sure he will, plus there is a girl who travels from hastings and is thinking of trying out the brighton gig :-) so hopefully they all come

Sorry for the late reply; I've been super busy. I'm so glad that you're having a good experience with your apprenticeship! Being a studio engineer sounds very cool! Thanks for sharing about your meeting with the producers; it was good hear that they were down to earth despite being a big name in the industry, and interesting that even they feel the industry is becoming too commercial. Keep up the good work! I know great things are in store for you, and I can't wait to read about them!:-D

well done Ms Turner...fame beckons:)
Thank you so much guys :hugs:
:wings:
well after getting an overall credit for my last four assignments and finishing top of the class  I got the results of the three assignments i just handed in, i was really worried because although i had done alot of research and notes and stuff ready to do the assignments, as you know the kids fell ill and then i got their ear infection which affected my studio time....well anyway i fought through it and still got my work in on time, thanks to M shooting over on the motorbike! And today i got the results they are
1.Credit
2.Distinction
3.Distinction
giving me an overall grade of Distinction which is the highest grade you can be given and once again top of the class, the only one to get a distinction overall :-D
also...
I wasnt able to start my recording project last week because my hearing was bad so i started this week, and it went really really well, i decided to record a rock song, laid the drums down yesterday and recorded two lead guitar tracks today, i decided to use the guitar riff from Marya's Check Out song as inspiration and our guitarist did a great job following it but adding his own little flair, sounded awesome
I hope when it's finished we will be allowed to bring the recording home so i can show you guys how i am getting on. But i am so happy with my project, it sounds like a real rock song :-D next week i add some bass and go from there :-)
I've got a couple of pics i can show you guys when i get a min to upload them, nothing flash but will give you an idea of what i'm talking about all the time.
The more work i do and the more time is spend recording music, i know this is what i'm meant to do
Well done Anji :hugs: :devildance:
Very cool :-D
Can't wait to see the pics and hope we all get to hear the track when It's done :devildance:
soo cool :-D truly awesome

Congratulations Anji!!!:santa_thumb_up::well_done::xmas_biggrin:
so happy for u!!
that is funtastic!!! :well_done:
so we believed in the right person-great :santa_thumb_up:
got the results of the others and....
well, not too bad lol 4 passes, 2 credits, 2 distinctions, on the coursework. but the more important ones were for the practical (recording, using the mixing console and the mix down) which were credit for recording, distinction for using the console and credit for mix down (my tutor said that's as good as you can get without having previous experience so i'm chuffed :-) )
Special comments on my evaluation sheet were - confident and competent when using the console, good communication with the musicians, recorded good raw sound and mixed to a high standard with good even levels.
So overall i'm really pleased :0)
congratulations anji :cool3:
was there also good communication between you and the marya roxx band members? :xmas_biggrin:
Well done :santa_thumb_up: as if there would have been any other result though :santa_kiss:
lol Frankie i'd like to think talking to Marya and her band is a privilage not a test :-D
thank you guys  this is really something i want to do and your support is invaluable to me :-) i'm really looking forward to the next level which starts after xmas, i hope i can keep the same standard of results :-)

23-12-2009, 00:05
I'm sure you will, Anji!!! Total confidence!!!
got the results of my last assignments i handed in
4 assignments,
credit
distinction
distinction
credit
so with two a piece i get an overall credit
This is even more special as i really had to use every spare minute i had working on these, even having to carry my laptop everywhere, as the kids were ill for most of the time i was working on these so i had sleepless nights and very little time to do them, now i wonder how well i could've done if i had been able to spend the time i wanted to on them :hehe:
sooo now on to the next four assignments lol, no rest for the wicked is what they say :hehe:
congratulations Anji!
i knew that u will go great! kisses and hugs!
:D :D :D
congratulations!!!!!
You'll produce bands now?
thanks guys :-D
well technically i am trained enough to record a band now Valou, and actually have one lined up to record sometime after easter.
But there is still a lot to learn and i won't fully qualify until july 2011 so still over a year to go yet.
So yes :-D i will produce bands in the future
congratulations anji :devildance:
Well done and congrats Anji :hugs: :devildance: Here's to a great future
Thanks guys :grouphug:
Absolutely Deb my future manager :hehe:
ok! results from my last 8 assignments 4 distinctions, 3 credits and 1 pass
going away for a few days, bit of a bummer that i've got 4 assignments to do due in the day after we return  no rest for the wicked, a working holiday it is then :coffee:
we have been learning alot about effects like delay, reverb, eq, etc i'm doing really well on the desk recording and my tutor is starting to get me to show the others who are not so good  not sure if that's a good thing, but i am very confident and am doing really good recordings, i have my recording recordings from level one i am trying to get online to share with my friends, and hopefully at the end of this level i will be alowed these recordings too, 4 of us have been grouped together for our final big big recording, i have alot of ideas but not too good at composing but in our group we have two very good composers and with me being good at the recording and producing part, i am really looking forward to getting our ideas going, if we get it right, this piece is gonna sound awesome
ok! results from my last 8 assignments 4 distinctions, 3 credits and 1 pass
i'm not really familar with these terms here (distinction, credits, pass),what do they mean in regard to your assignments? i hope it doesn't mean you passed just 1
Lol frankie good god no :-D a pass means I did what was asked, a credit shows I added a bit more info and showed independent thought and a distinction means I have done all I have just described but also showed exceptional knowledge and understanding and covered anything linked to that particular subject, basically it means the tutor thinks there was no more I couldve done  so a distinction is the one to aim for :-D
wow then it's really good news :wings:
welldone anji :clapping:
well done anji!
i am so happy for you!!
well done again! :D :D :D :D
Absolutely Deb my future manager :hehe:
LOL only just saw this bit :devillaugh:
:congratualtions: Well done and congrats yet again Anji :hugs:
Looking forward to hearing some stuff :monkeydance:
Just realised i didnt answer anyone here
Thank you so much for the support guys :-)
update -
7 assignments - 4 distinctions and 3 credits :0) some on studio wiring and the others on music analysis/fault finding and repairing, really chuffed cos alot of this was practical work and quite important for a sound engineer to he good at :-D
do you prefer the practical works there or rather the theory anji?
Glad it's going so well :-) You deserve it :hugs:
do you prefer the practical works there or rather the theory anji?
Well, i really prefer the practical because that's ultimately what i'm going to be doing for real soon, but i find the theory interesting and of course its good to know why what you're doing does what it does (that made sense in my head lol)
Glad it's going so well :-) You deserve it :hugs:
Thank you so much hun :hugs: i am so glad to see you back

hey that amazing anji!!
just saw your reply!!
beautiful! keep it like this!yu are doing great!
Wow it's been so long since i updated here. Everything got so busy and i had so much work to do :coffee:
I've just started the final level of my course which means in April i will be fully qualified and will receive my degree :wings:
The good news about this is that this final level is designed to prepare us for surviving as freelance workers as well as the final stages of the recording process like mastering etc it takes us that one step further than the regular recording and mix engineers out there
What is also means is i am ready and qualified enough to take on work and even though I don’t have any experience there is a band willing to give me a shot
Abandoman – A comic rap group who have just won a whole bunch of awards as well as the very prestigious Hackney Empire Best New Act , they sold out all of their shows at the Edinburgh Festival having to add more to meet demand, they also appear on one of our national radio stations BBC4 and BBC6 reguarly as the guest musical act. These guys are so talented and fun to work with I feel very fortunate to be involved. We are starting work on the album very soon and I can’t wait!

I have also managed to get on the books of the biggest film recording company in north London http://www.talkingpicturesltd.com/ who specialize in live concerts and music videos as well as other smaller projects, I have been taken on as a trainee to their Sound Engineer, this adds another tool to my trade and gives me some experience in a different field, I’m very excited about this too. These guys do concerts at the wembley arena and stadium and have done music videos for Justin Timberlake, Kylie and other big artists, so this could be a big opportunity for me if I bide my time doing the smaller jobs.
So loads has been happening for me and I am very excited to see where this journey takes me, I’m putting all my effort into it so I hope it all pays off one day ☺
